Address, hours and getting here from Sennaya Square

Our Pyshki iz Detstva® café (the name means “Pyshki from Childhood”) stands right by Sennaya Square, in the first building on Moskovsky Prospekt, on the way to Sennaya Market and next to the PIK shopping centre. Three metro lines meet here, so it's easy to drop in from any part of the city, whichever way you're heading.

Three metro stations a minute away. Sennaya Ploshchad, Sadovaya and Spasskaya form one of the biggest interchange hubs in St. Petersburg. Whichever line you arrive on, the walk to us is short: come up from the underground and you're practically at our door. You'd be hard pressed to find a handier place in the city to pop into on your way.

We open in the morning and close at 8 pm, an hour earlier than our other cafés, so plan your visit before 20:00. The calmest times are weekdays before noon and after 3 pm: the crowds at Sennaya ebb and flow, and in a quiet hour your pyshki, St. Petersburg's hot yeast rings dusted with powdered sugar, come to you straight off the chute with no queue.

A Soviet pyshki machine you can watch

Most pyshki cafés keep the machine hidden in the kitchen. Ours stands in full view, and it's worth lingering for.

The dough dispenser squeezes out a ring of dough, which drops into hot oil and forms a crust within a second. Hardly any fat gets inside, so the pyshka comes out light and soft inside, with a thin crisp crust. Then comes the carousel: for the first half of the circle one side cooks, then the chute flips the pyshka over and the other side finishes, and the ready pyshka gets a generous dusting of powdered sugar. Children freeze by the counter, grown-ups reach for their phones. Amid the bustle of Sennaya, these are a couple of minutes when you can simply watch something real being made.

Our machine is Soviet, assembled in Kyiv. Production stopped in 1991, and no new ones exist. Each of our machines was found, bought and restored by hand. If you doubt it's the real thing, just ask, and we'll show you the factory nameplate with the year of manufacture and the serial number.

Each of our machines bears the name of a Russian emperor or empress. Here on Moskovsky Prospekt it's “Pyotr Alekseevich”, named after Peter I, better known as Peter the Great, the founder of the city. Ask for him by name, and the staff at the counter will tell you where he came from and how old he is.

The factory nameplate of “Pyotr Alekseevich”: AP-3M, 1990. Come over and we'll show you the real thing.

Menu: pyshki, coffee and signature drinks

It's the same pyshka as at all our cafés: hot, dusted with powdered sugar, 40 ₽. Add a topping of your choice: condensed milk, jam (apricot, cherry, strawberry, raspberry), white chocolate or chocolate topping.

And there's plenty to drink: specialty coffee, signature teas (sea buckthorn with thyme, raspberry with ginger and rosemary, currant with mint), lemonades, milkshakes and mors, a traditional berry drink. A proper café has grown up around the real pyshka.

For a group or the whole family there are 12+1 and 24+2 sets, with bonus pyshki on a big order. And to take a piece of St. Petersburg home, pick up a gift box of 4, 6, 8 or 15 pyshki.

What our guests say

This is a live rating with real reviews from Yandex Maps, and we never edit them. Our cafés are rated 4.7–5.0 on average.

Get one pyshka and try it, but don't wander off too far: you'll be back for seconds.

There's no need to take anyone's word for it. One hot pyshka costs 40 ₽ and settles any doubts faster than any description.

Drop in on the way and warm up

Someone is always in a hurry at Sennaya: changing trains, heading to the market, going home from work. That's exactly why it feels so good to stop and catch your breath here for a minute.

Drop in on your way: between two metro stations, after the market, before a long journey. Grab a hot pyshka and a coffee, stand by the machine, warm up. No detour needed: it's a warm pause right where you're passing anyway. A minute of calm and sweet warmth in the middle of the city's busiest crossroads.

And if you have children with you, the trip has already paid off: they'll remember the show at the machine for a long time.
